A House Plant

We have a new house house plant living with us. I thought our Eastlake plant stand could use some company as I couldn't keep it appointed with fresh bouquets as often as I would like. The fact that I chose a spider plant is quite funny because as a child, I was deathly afraid of my parents' spider plant. This was because my young imagination believed that actual spiders (most likely thousands) made their home in it.

This house plant acquisition (which I couldn't help but thoroughly examine for spider inhabitants) was instigated by my Mom, who sent me the following note not too long ago.

It read:

Now just to give some history, my Mom and I talk on the phone often (almost daily). She lives in California. Nevertheless, I think my Mom still thinks I'm off at college and getting something in the mail makes me feel loved. Ok, it does.

The things she sends in the mail vary...health tid bits like the above, articles on river and wetland restoration (for Hubby), recipes, and then there's the hard goods such as holiday decorations, clothing, books, pruning shears and twine...and most recently, lots and lots of baby clothes.

My Mom is actually coming to visit next week and truth be told, I'll miss getting that little something special in the mail. Although I wouldn't put it past her to mail something on her way to the airport.

Love her. xo

Just think Trina, one day, you will be the one sending love in the mail to your children...and I just bet, in the very near future, they'll be finding thoughtful *gifts* in the mailbox too...such a fun and lovely tradition. xo J~

  6. Hi Trina

I just discovered you via the Diversion Project. Your home is so beautiful, and is that really your cutting garden I found in a back post about dahlias?! Oh boy!
Having just had my mum to stay for a week from the UK I can totally relate to this item.
It's been a pleasure getting to know about you, I'll be back for more!

  8. The plant makes the bathroom picture perfect ~ and 97% pollution-free. Can you still get in and out of that tub? (:

  9. Hi Susy,
No, I'm afraid that I'm feeling a bit too big to even consider getting into a bath right now (safely that is) - unless my husband was there to 'hoist' me in and out!

  11. Very cute story about your mom. My grandmother used to do that. She got it in her head that there was a ketchup shortage in Boston so she lifted packets everywhere she went--obviously the classiest of restaurants--and sent me a box of them every now and then. Of course, I almost never used ketchup but I miss those boxes now.

  16. Good Morning Trina!
Your new plant looks just as lovely on your special stand as all your bouquets did, especially with the light reflecting off it.
And, what a sweet mother you have! Mine is the same but now she's learned how to text so I get sweet notes all throughout the day. :)
    Take care!

  17. I love the look of your new spider plant on your stand. It adds a special touch to your room! You have a delightful mother. Her mail tidbits remind me of mine - she sends all kinds of little notes, filled with clippings - both inspirational and humorous. Now that we live six blocks apart and see each other or talk every day she still sends little notes in the mail once in awhile! Enjoy your visit with your mother.

  20. Trina I loved this post! My mother lived close by until her death and she was always giving me little things or writing thank you notes to us, even though at one point she lived just one house away! Your mother is a treasure and I know you will have a wonderful visit with her!

The plant looks lovely on your great stand, and please let your mother know that I'm off to buy a plant to improve my indoor air quality. Her note has sent ripples out on the pond, so please thank her for me.

My mom does the same thing. She sends me everything from articles, wedding and baby announcements, and just a care package of small things. I love getting them!

  29. Love your blog. Did you know that each spider on your plant is a whole new plant in itself. Just stick one in dirt and you can fill your home and mom's home with lovely little spiders.

  30. I love this post. You are so blessed to have your Mom. I bet she would say that about you and your family. Taking care of each other is what life is all about. I love to send things in the mail, especially to my sister. I think we had a spider plant when I was growing up. Oddly, I don't have any houseplants....maybe I need one!

  31. I hope you're keeping those notes and putting them in a book.
I love spider plants and that is a beautiful location for yours. It should be very happy there.

  32. Love the new plant, I never thought of it potentially having spiders though, too funny.

It's so sweet that your mom still mails you things. I started sending my daughter packages, cards, letters, etc when she went away to college 4 years ago. She graduated in June and move to Toronto (Ontario) and I still mail her things!

  37. Aren't moms the best? Anytime something exciting (to me at least) happens I love calling my mom and having a good chat about it too! That's so great you are so close. What do you plan on doing when she visits? Will she be there for the births?

Love your new plant too. If it makes you feel any better, my grandma calls those "airplane" plants cause they just take off! Maybe that name wouldn't creep you out as much. Ha!

  38. Just hearing that makes me love your mom. And your plant? Well...it's just gorgeous!

  39. in Germany this well loved houseplant is called civil-servant-weed as you can sit it into some corner and it grows and grows and works and works (without complaining and wanting too much attention). anyway it looks great beside your tub.

  43. This cracks me up because when I was little we had a spider plant too and I never liked it. :) Mostly because of it's name (I didn't think it had spiders in it.) I basically have aracnophobia!
I hope you enjoy your visit with your mom. I can tell she is special to you (and I loved her note!)
