Heirloom Tomatoes

Thanks to our recent warm Indian summer days, we're finally able to pick some of our heirloom tomatoes. The tomatoes have been drastically behind this year due to the cool early summer. But the autumn sun has helped nudge these voluptuous fruits to ripeness.

The basil is done growing for the season. I made lots of pesto through the summer which we happily enjoyed with pasta, pizza (in place of tomato sauce), and sandwiches much like the one shown above. So in place of pesto, I've been using sliced avocado instead.

The recipe includes: a crusty loaf of organic whole wheat bread, a sweet tomato, organic avocado and organic provolone cheese. I toast the bread first, then add avocado, tomato and cheese and bake it in the oven for a few minutes until cheese has melted.

It's the perfect way to eat a fresh picked tomato on a beautiful fall day.

  13. They look absolutely delicious - we don't get our share of heirloom tomatoes in Ireland quite the same way you do in the states - boy do I miss them - tried growing tomatoes this year but lack of sun - made them very delayed - will try again this year.
Lovely photos - thanks for sharing.

  15. What a beautiful blog! And what a beautiful house! I also love the country life just like you! I had never seen the yellow tomatoes, in Italy we have only the red (and green if they are bitter!)
    Congratulations for the great blog!

  17. Trina,
Love stopping by your blog. You always have some wonderfully beautiful fruit or veggies to share, recipes and those flowers!! Love the flowers you share with us.
Need a tip on extending the life of hyndrangeas in the vase once they are cut. Your beautiful pic you posted the other day had me buying a bouquet of them at the grocery store, but they didn't make it beyond a day.

  21. The tomatoes and the sandwich look divine. You're so lucky to still be getting some. Our tomato harvest was pretty lackluster this year.

  22. look so perfect...the mosquitoes ate me before I could pick mine....beastly summer. My basil, however, was amazing! I could just run through the rows and whack off bunches before I was eaten alive. I freeze my pesto - don't you?

  23. It's as if Summer was saying "sorry for not doing such a great job this year...I've asked Fall to be extra kind to make up for it". The crazy thing is...who knows what next year will be like...a cucumber year, a lettuce year, a bean year...a tomato year...gardening in the PNW is always an such adventure! Congratulations on your very first, spring to fall, farmhouse veggie garden, it was a huge success (yes it was)...and I'm so happy that you shared it all with us, thank you! xo J~

BTW- I love your delicious combo...the provolone sounds like such a nice addition, I'm sure the whole thing is yummy! :d

  31. Beautiful tomatoes! That sandwich sounds good, too. :) We're finally getting around to planning a garden, we've lived in our current place almost 2 years, and we had to eradicate a sticker problem first. So now, we'll see how much fun we can have growing things!

  34. It's terrible, but I'm the only one in the house who will eat tomatoes, so we rarely cook with them--or have them. I love tomato sandwiches.
