A New Lamp

I stumbled upon a new alabaster lamp the day I bought our new chair. I say stumbled because although I have been indeed needing additional table lamps for our house, I hadn't expected to find one in our price range.

In fact, I have come to realize just how hard it is to find beautiful antique lamps - affordably.

I love the carved leaves on this alabaster lamp and its lovely accompanying alabaster finial. This lamp was purchased for $60, which was surprising considering that it is in such wonderful condition (no broken pieces, no significant chips, etc.).

All it needed was a good re-wiring, which I've just had done.

If you're an alabaster/marble lamp collector like I am, you will know that these days you can expect to pay well over $100 for one (due to their popularity in the last several years). And even at that price, you'll find that they are not in all that of great condition.

We were bundled up in our mittens and hats today. A chilly, wet cold front moved in yesterday, which even made me take out a pair of wool socks.

But Spring is here...the handful of lilac bushes are blooming in our yard. I haven't had the desire to clip any yet as the blossoms are sparse. Perhaps the cold winter was hard on lilacs this year.

P.S. Shari at Little Blue Deer has given my blog another sprucing up! I love working with her!

  1. What a beautiful find. I love the design. Alabaster lamps aren't just expensive here in Canada, they're actually quite scarce. Although having said that, a month ago I came across two in the same antique mall! You can imagine how quickly I snatched them up. And they only ended up being $100.

  3. That is a beautiful lamp, and at such a great price. I'll say, you sure do find some wonderful things! A lot of times it is being in the right place at the right time - and knowing what to look for. Congratulations on this purchase, it's lovely.

  4. antique lighting fixtures are always so much more interesting than new ones, why is that? new ones look so cheap by comparison. Plus they're less expensive! the rewiring is simple and easy, or inexpensive to hire out. This looks great and glad it found a good home.

  7. So pretty! You have inspired a love for vintage alabaster lamps in me. I have one being rewired and a shade ordered. It is amazing the carvings survived on your new, old lamp. They are beautiful. A great find!

  9. I didn't even know alabaster lamps were a trend, but that's a beautiful one. The desk or side table it's on must have a story, too. Love the contrast of alabaster foliage with the real flowers. Thank you for sharing this! Take care and stay warm, Em

  11. What a beautiful lamp! I love that it came with the matching alabaster finial. We didn't have much luck with our lilacs this year, here in upstate NY. But I still managed to bring a few fragrant blooms home and enjoy them :)

  14. Thanks for sharing the price that you paid for your "new" lamp. That was very helpful for those of us who might be lucky enough to find one in our local antique shops. I had no idea what would be considered a good price and now I know!

    Thanks again,
    Karla in (dry)CA.

  16. A beautiful lamp indeed and a great price. I think you have inspired me to look for one.

I purchased some antique lamps from the 30's a few years back on Craigslist. It was $35 for the pair and I just love them. I purchased new lamp shades and finials (only one was original so I purchased two new crystal ones). They are cream with hand painted tiny pink rose buds on them with a gold edging around the base and a gold criss cross design with the buds in the center. They are feminine and pretty; somehow new lamps are devoid of such pretty details.

  17. Well, goodness, I guess the 3 alabaster lamps I just found at a garage sale were a downright steal at less than $10 each! Two have some damage, but one is in perfect condition ... although all 3 need re-wiring. I think I'm going to attempt the re-wiring on my own.

  20. Great lamp. I just found 2 similar lamps at our local thrift store for $9.99 each. I also got a 30% discount so I skipped out of there happy to have scored this find!
