Getting Ready for New Clapboards

The benefit of having Mike remove the old siding (much of which has residual lead paint), in addition to cost savings, is that he can closely control the removal so that lead paint debris does not contaminate the soil and yard. He has established two different levels of plastic barriers, with the top barrier replaced daily, and the lower layer in place for the duration.

There have been a few treasures behind the old clapboards, such as newspapers from 1910, and very beautiful (and large) sheathing boards, such as the one shown above. In case you can't read it, that is a 22-inch wide board (at 1" thick).

I will do a separate post on the siding. The clapboards are being milled in a local barn shop by our neighbor. He makes them the old-fashioned way... with the rough stock dried out in his dad's barn. Soon, Nate and Darren will arrive to fix the rotten sill under the front door (which will be replaced) and start installing clapboards.

It's very exciting.

  2. So happy that you are now to the point of working on the outside. It's a really nice looking home and with the entry way that you are planning on building, it will be gorgeous. Hoping that "we" (notice how I included myself in this, b/c I am so excited for you guys) are still thinking this is the month to move in! linda r (phila burbs)

    1. Yes, the move-in date has been pushed back....again. Very stressful, it is really, quite stressful. Now we are hoping for September!

    2. Yes; I understand. It seems like everything that is really worth while takes a long time and is never ever easy. You guys went through hell to have those beautiful babies. It took forever, but was so worth it. I know your house will be the same. I guess it doesn't help that strangers (like me) are basically stalking you waiting to see how your home turns out!!! Hang in there!!! linda r (phila burbs)

  3. Construction timelines never seem to go as originally planned. I am always working my timelines by holidays and as Labor Day may not be your move in time, we hope to see pictures of Halloween costumes + masks (of whatever mode - super heros, princesses) at the new front door with many pumpkins. I know Thanksgiving will be a very grateful day! Carol

    1. Ha-ha! I know, what a look huh? I believe it's to easily remove boots when walking off plastic...But he wears it well! And of course, socks are WOOL. How he manages that on these hot summer days I am not sure.

    2. lol...my husband wears boots and socks also, but they are cotton socks, when he works on or around the house. But think about it, he's working with heavy equipment, materials, and as of lately, has been in the blacksmith shop working on H-L hinges, so, it's a safety matter. I love how this house in a way is being saved, the repairs that you have made from chimney's to siding would have eventually been it's demise. Truly hoping that September is your move in date for you! Donna :)

  10. When you first started writing about your improvements to your rental home, I wondered about, and I think I even commented, that I didn't understand why you were making such "permanent" improvements (like changing light fixtures) to a home you were not planning to live in very long. Now that I see the amount of effort and time going into the first portion of this renovation and with it, the time you spend in your rental home growing longer and longer, I suddenly understand!
