Clapboards, continued...

As I mentioned in my last post, our new clapboards for the house were milled by our neighbor (as the crow flies).

They came in four varying lengths, which is custom whenever you order clapboards such as these.

Mike has the arduous task of priming all of them before they are installed. He has set up a priming workspace in the barn/garage....

...And here in the utility room.

Nate and Darryn have returned to install the clapboards for us after a few sill repairs.

The sill was rotten on the backside of the house where the stone patio was/is. Here the replacement sill has been maneuvered into place.

The house is going to be so different with the new siding. Between the pure sturdiness of the new clapboards and their contrasting white paint (to the previous grey), it will be dramatic.

Soon we will be able to describe our house without using the words 'the one with the peeling grey paint.'

  11. Oh this is great ! I have been checking to see what was happening next.
I live in an ordinary house which is for sale. The house that I hope to buy as soon as this sells is an Arts & Crafts house ... that needs no work ! how great is that ? you can appreciate that lol

  12. I think I'm a little disappointed the new color will be white. I'm sure it will be gorgeous, since I've never seen you make a bad decision about finishes yet, but I loved the gray. I'm sitting over here in my white house wishing I could paint it gray!

  16. Lovely! What white are you ending up painting the exterior?

  17. It is an off-the-shelf white from Benjamin Moore. Their Regal Select/High Build/Soft Gloss. It is what is typically used on historic white houses in our area. Thankfully, it was one of the easier decisions of our renovation!

  18. Are the clapboards being replaced on the second story also? Everything you have done so far looks wonderful, cannot wait to see the final results!

    1. Yes, the whole house! Every single clapboard will be removed (by Mike) and the new clapboards will go up in their place. The picture only shows the new ones half way up as Mike hadn't set up the scaffolding on that side to remove the old ones. And yes, we can't wait either! Best, Catherine

  19. I continue to be amazed at your attention to detail. Never have I seen a home renovation/restoration performed with such diligent care and effort. I have been following your blog for quite sometime now and you never seem to make a misstep. Everything you do is with grace, style and elegant simplicity. Cannot wait to see the end result. I'm sure you have mentioned your move-in date but I missed it, when will it be?

    1. Dear Chris, You are so kind, thank you for your words. Our move-in date is hopefully no later than October. I cannot even believe I just wrote that as we thought our move-in date was many months ago. But everything takes time, especially when Mike is doing so much of the work himself - while carrying on a full-time job. So slowly but surely...we're getting there. Best,
      Catherine

  20. I was wondering about your paint choice. What kind of outdoor paint? What are the factors that are in the choice? Love to read more about that! :)
