August Greetings

Well, it certainly has been awhile. So much has happened in the last several months, I don't know quite where to begin.

I do know we are blessed with many chapters in Life. They come and go, some only mildly different from the last or the next, and some that feel like volumes all on their own.

This is one of those chapters for us. We are in a new land, a new community, a new home.

We were sad to say goodbye to our farmhouse - especially the garden as our plants seemed most vulnerable. And the task of packing up our house was an arduous one. It began very organized but in the end, things were thrown into boxes in complete exhaustion.

Most of our things are still in boxes as the majority of our belongings have gone into storage. But it is surprisingly just fine with us as there is an overriding comfort in the realization that we are home.

We have rented a lovely little cottage to hold us as we explore the region and decide exactly where we’ll settle.

I have to say that I have moved several times in my life and I am constantly amazed at how the familiar comforts of our day-to-day are so quickly replaced by new comforts. The habits we once knew become shy memories that feel long ago, and the rhythm of the new place starts to feel like it's been a constant all along.

We feel blessed to be embraced by our new home, and are reveling in the daily discoveries of our new surroundings.

I hope that everyone has had a splendid summer. Although there are a few weeks left in the season, I feel as if there has been a shift in the light and air these last few days. I opened the door this morning and took a deep breath. Fall is near.

Beautiful, resplendent, cozy Fall.

Catherine

  2. So good to hear from you! Glad you are getting all settled. Can't wait to hear all about your new surroundings. We got baby girl back to college last week, and are starting yet another new chapter here. The 2nd year as empty nesters doesn't seem as daunting as the first.

  5. might I be the nosy one who asks where you are? and perhaps why you are there? a job? family? a calling in the wind? It must've been something to pull you away from that heavenly farmhouse. So curious...

  6. What a lovely surprise to see you in my feed this morning! I have moved several times myself and more recently from a home my husband built and our children grew up in. We have been in our current rental a couple of years now and what you said,

"The habits we once knew become shy memories that feel long ago, and the rhythm of the new place starts to feel like it's been a constant all along."

ring so true. It is most perfectly stated. Hope to see you on my feed again soon. Blessings, Gina

  8. I too began a new chapter whilst you were away. I have been inspired by your blog for many years now and finally bit the bullet a few months ago. I am an Australian mum, wife and artist and blog about the magic and the mundane. I'd love you to pop by if you get the chance one day.
My parents celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this weekend and they have lived in 26 homes (most of which I have too) so I know that feeling of new beginnings! Embrace change and be grateful for the past. Life is a gift x

  25. So wonderful to hear that you're comfortably, and happily settling in your new 'home'...such great news! The air has definitely turned towards fall here, but I'm loving it, and it's still in the 70's which helps the easing into the seasonal change.

  67. A lot of being "at home" comes more from a sense of place than the actual place itself. Sounds like you are feeling at home, even if it is temporary.

  69. We have moved a few times in the last few years and have another move coming up - whilst the process itself is stressful, I agree with you that its amazing how quickly we feel "at home" in the new surroundings. I like to think that so long as you take the people you love, everything will be OK. And I also like to remember that for many thousands of generations our ancestors were nomads and must have been very good at turning a new place into home very quickly. So perhaps it is embedded in our DNA. Best of luck to you and thank you for sharing the journey with us.

  79. Dear Jo,
We have relocated for many reasons...A calling, family, a job. I’m not sure if I’ll blog about our region specifically. I haven’t had much time to think about it so I suppose we’ll see.

    Dear Linda,
Babies are very well! I suppose that they are children now but we still call them ‘our babies.’ Perhaps we always will!

    Dear Lily, Jane and Mary,
Trina is an abbreviation/nickname of Catherine. I have been meaning to go by Catherine since Mike and I were married (almost a decade ago) so it’s been long overdue.

    Dear Patricia,
I’m not certain if I should post pictures on our house rental (in its entirety) as it’s not truly ours. But I’m sure I’ll be sharing a few snippets here and there.

    Dear Mary,
The gate is not our cottage gate. It’s a gate that’s nearby and I just love the beautiful white pickets combined with the old rock fence.

    xoCatherine

  98. Your post SO resonated with me. I moved many, many times growing up, but when I think of my childhood I never remember the moves (thankfully my parents shouldered the burdens there) - I think of the many experiences I had. I lived in the north, I lived in the south, I lived in the southwest. Home really was about where my family was.

Now that I am adult, I have lived in me place for 16 years - that's amazing to me. My kids have grown up in one city. They have lived in two houses, which to them seems major but to me seems quite stable.

Enjoy your new home, your new experiences. It's so good to get a new perspective. I look forward to following along!
