The Grape Vines

When we bought our house, the old Concord grape vines were a bit overgrown like the rest of the property.

It took a little of this (Hubby dusting off the weed whacker)...

And a little of that (Hubby pushing the mower around).

It took some good pruning...

And finally, some summer sunshine.

At the end of a hot summer day, it's a nice spot to sit back and watch the vines grow.

Some of Hubby's pickings from last fall.

  1. Oh, how I remember my grandparents' pergola over the dining room patio, covered with a very old Concord grape vine. The grape bunches hung down through the pergola. The fragrance!!! All things Concord came from the fruit of that vine. Thank you for the memory!
    Wonderful vines you have there!

  6. Somewhere in my childhood I remember Concord grapes. I must ask my mother if my grandparents had a grapevine. I know if I close my eyes I can see and almost smell them. Wonderful grape vines.

  11. I love the look of vines. We live in wine country so I would be able to grow many varieties, it's just the work in maintaining the vines that keeps from it for now. I would love just two simple rows like this though. Gorgeous, as always.

  13. Beautiful! I have been wondering about this. I want to plant some. Do they need something for the vines to grow on? Everytime I go into the garden center I am so tempted to get some.

They were growing on strong wires, supported by posts. We kept them as is as that system has held up well!

  17. Concord grapes grow wild all around my neighborhood and when I walk at dusk in fall, they perfume the air with heady, fruity smell. Mmmmmmmmmmm. Beautiful post.

  18. We tried our hand at growing grapes, but they just didn't do well here in the hot south! What a lovely spot to sit and relax.

  19. Deep rich purple grapes right off the vine...so delicious! Most of ours never make it in. You have more vines and they look great! Good job. Jelly making in your future?

  22. We bought our farmhouse mostly because of the view looking out on the grapevines! Last winter the ancient arbor fell and now they are on the ground! Do you think with some serious pruning they will come back to life? How much did you remove to get such a good crop of grapes?

  23. Oh, I love this! It looks very nice.

  24. Trina, like you and yours, my husband and I purchased our land and farm house about 11 years ago and did a renovation. I hope you folks enjoy the process like we did. It is a lot of work, but so worth it when the grass is mowed, the frogs are singing their songs, the pasture is green with our horses out there, and we can sit back and look at our "Shangri-la".
Enjoy it. It is so much darn fun! Debi

  28. Hi Trina. I just discovered your blog through a random posting on some other blog in a search for Ikea wood counters, which I am getting ready to install. I just wanted to say that your house is one of the most incredible renovations I've ever seen and belongs in This Old House magazine. If you haven't submitted it, you absolutely must. The white/wood scheme is divine. Also, your children are gorgeous. I have a friend who had a little boy on Monday after 7 years of infertility. It truly is a blessing. Looking forward to following more.

  29. Trina,
Strong wires and posts it is! Thanks so much for getting back to me. I love how yours look. I am going to get some this week. It is so rare that I find organic grapes in the store, and the kiddos just adore them. This is going to be a fun project for us!

I love grape vines. Our son has a large grape vineyard here in West Texas and I can hardly wait until summer when I can go out and get some awesome photos. He sells to a winery here.

I just love your pretty blog. I am signing up to follow and hope you will come see me soon.

  44. Lovely old vines..or old craftsman home near Pullman Wa. Had them surrounding our back patio and another on the patio off the sun room. How I miss them...I plan to plant grapes at the new cottage as soon as the fence is in.
