Where The Wild Things Are

Well, this morning they were here! We were treated with an unannounced visit from the infamous Gilhouley Elk Herd. It was such a wonderful, wonderful surprise as their migration path runs through our property, and for years we've been keeping an eye out for them.

I quietly stepped out on the porch to try and capture their blessed visit before they slipped away.

But they kept coming...

and coming...

and coming...

until finally, the line ended.

Dressed in my pajamas, I stood there on the porch and just watched them peacefully make their way through.

The sound of sixty or so elk crunching through the frosty grass was exhilarating to hear.

We've only seen this herd once before - in a field up the road where there are no houses for miles. We've seen lots of tracks, some right in front of the fence, but until now the herd had always alluded us.

It was a beautiful way to start the morning. It makes me so very happy to have these friends nearby. They are such beautiful majestic creatures and it was a pure honor to set our eyes on them.

  23. Sounds lovely. At times we see our neighborhood fox and I get giddy like a little girl. He's so beautiful and gets close enough to let me see the tip of his tail. Once he was even in my driveway. Like the family dog waiting for us to come home. xoxo

  26. Beautiful. Witnessing wildlife like this is one of the best things in life. I still remember walking alongside a huge elk herd up north, encountering two moose next to my cabin in NH, and more. So glad you didn't miss this! xoxo

  31. WOW -that is COOL!! We live in Georgia (no elk, here) and visiting yellowstone this summer. Are those the elk that migrate down to Jackson Hole each winter?

  33. Lovely images Trina - feel I have to whisper my comment in very hushed tones. While you are blessed with the elks, we live in a koala corridor. So once a year, we get a parade of ambling, chilled-out koalas up our little country lane. They go on the hunt for a new patch of eucalyptus trees to munch on. And then they put Barry White on the koala stereo & get 'romantic' in the noisiest way!
