Morning Dahlias

I woke up this morning and decided to cut some dahlias at the flower farm. It was a bittersweet feeling to see the dahlias in full bloom. On the one hand, I was excited to see their fresh blossoms, but also a little sad as their blossoms are a sure sign that summer is coming to an end.

I smiled as I approached the flower fields and saw all of the different varieties of dahlias blooming so happily under the soft August sun.

I decided to limit my cuttings to the pink variety. The dahlias will be growing strong until our first frost, so there are many weeks left for me to return and clip other varieties.

Happy dahlia season to you!

  20. WOW those are gorgeous!!! A flower farm? hmmm. That sounds like a rewarding career. Do they charge you to cut or only by how much you cut? Just curious.

  21. Hi Trish,
The dahlias are 50 cents a stalk. Many stalks have two to three flowers on them so it's a great deal!

  25. These dahlias are beautiful. Dahlias, like most flowers, always remind me of my mom. They are my favorite flower. The CSA we belong to has a picking farm, and with our share, we can pick all we want. I think of your earlier posts of the picking farm every time I go out with my scissors. It's such a wonderful part of the week.

  29. Hi Trina, I love the dahlias too. Do you grow them just for the pleasure of it or do you actually sell them? Is that a dumb question?

    Really beautiful either way....xx kelley

  34. Hi Trina, how gorgeous. You are so blessed to live in a beautiful part of a beautiful state. Wow! Love those flowers. Do share the other colours when you bring more home.

Thanks for your note on the Lee furniture. I am totally paralysed by this decision as it is very expensive. The sofa with Z grade (near top) fabric is $4300 and the chair with BB (top) is $1900. I think the chair price is okay compared to all the junk I have seen but the sofa is mad.

I want linen but David is afraid it will be rough. Do you find your linen rough? I know you went with Rowe, but we don't have a supplier for that with any volume. I have seen your chairs but found them a little too small for my fat butt and the fact that I like to curl up and tuck my legs under in the chair and read. So I want a wider, deeper seat.

I do love the Lee sofa but I am so afraid to buy sight-unseen. As I said, I am comfortable with the dimensions knowing what seat height and depth I like (our current sofa is almost identical) but it is the slope of the back and its firmness that concerns me. THAT I cannot imagine. I know how my butt will feel from sitting on the down-wrapped core on several other pieces, but how will my back feel when I lean back?!

Tough call. We have such shitty furniture and decor stores here that everything nice is custom but how do you buy a sofa custom?!!!! Even Ethan Allen has ugly stuff mostly that doesn't look stylish and modern and fresh. Other than that it is the usual junk from Bernhardt, etc. for $3000 for something that isn't special or unique or made with any concern for the planet.

    I am torn!

ANyway, know you went through a similar dilemma so thanks for listening. Do you like your sofa? I always wonder how they sit.

How are you feeling? Love the pickle and dahlia posts. :)

  42. I wish I knew of a dahlia farm near us...there *has* to be one somewhere...maybe by the tulip and daffodil fields in La Connor, it would be so fun to be able to go to one. Have you thought of growing them? I bet they would just thrive at the farmhouse.
    Love the soft pink...very,very pretty!

  43. I have the same ambiguous feeling at the sight of dahlias: the remind me of my grandmothers passion for gardening and they are like a speed-indicator on the dashboard of a car: the year is driving fast, the year is advanced, the year is nearly there (where? fall? christmas?). cheers from ireland eliane

  45. Hi Trina,

Have you noticed that any colored paired with white automatically looks sharp? I have found I love ANY color with white. I've always liked blue & white together and so your pink flowers in their white surrounding look so clean, sharp and, of course, beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Lots of love to you ..Oh, and I wanted to ask you - is Lucy aware of the babies yet? Dogs usually sense something..Rachaelxx

  51. Hi Rachael,
It's funny you should ask because just yesterday I had a chat with Lucy about the babies. So if she didn't already know, she does now!

  52. Hi Trina,

I always love your flower pictures! I am totally jealous that you have a cutting farm-how wonderful is that! You always do such a good job of arranging/presenting them too. :)

This may be a really silly question, but do you ever have problems with ants or spiders on your flowers. We have a hydrangea bush that I LOVE and I want to cut the flowers but there are little ants all over them and I don't really want ants inside my house. :( Am I being ridiculous? :) Just thought I would ask someone with more experience if there were any inside tips. :)

    Thanks!

  53. Hi Katie,
We certainly get aphids and other pests on our flowers and so we try and remember to spray them regularly. We only use all natural products that have been OMRI listed: http://www.omri.org/
    They work great!!!

  56. I spent yesterday weeding the garden as spring approaches in Australia. You have reminded me why I bothered. We don't have fields of dahlias, but the joy I get from our roses, lavender and flowering natives when they finally get there is worth all the effort!

We lost all 20 of our dahlia plants this year.
Due to weather, snails and deer.
How in the world do they keep the deer away from the dahlias?
Thanks for posting such lovely photos.
