A Summer Living Room

We decided to rearrange the living room for the summer. To keep things fresh we moved the two chairs in front of the windows, and have the couch facing them. We have a beautiful view of Mt. Adams over in Washington state (we're in Oregon), so we're focusing on that view through the clear skies of summer instead of on the fireplace, which we probably won't use much.

The peonies are still smiling. This Japanese variety doesn't seem to last as long as the classic Sara Bernhardt styles. But I love them just the same. They are so unique and large that their limited life span is all the more cherished.

We still need to order a larger sea grass rug for this room. The sea grass above is meant to go in the dining room which is several feet shorter (in both directions) than the one we'll eventually place here. But we're trying to space out our home expenses so the rug purchase is on hold for now.

I'd also like to get a delicate table to put between the two chairs. I have several antique side tables (all dark wood) but I'd like to lighten it up a bit with something made of glass perhaps...with gold metal legs. Something bright and light.

  8. You have my DREAM view and you are making the MOST of it! My parents live in Ridgefield, WA just over the river from Portland and when I take my kids to visit in the summer, we spend so much time outdoors enjoying the long, dry days and the beautiful sunsets {and four mountain views on a very clear day}. I had never considered rearranging a room seasonally, but in this case, it works really really well. Love the little table idea ~ I can just see it. xx P&H

  11. Trina,
I like the new arrangement, and I bet that is such a great thing to lounge on the sofa and look out the window.

    And the peonies...ahh..love them!

  12. Trina I think you have one of the loveliest homes I've ever seen.
I've really enjoyed seeing how all your hard work has paid off. Is the backdrop to your 'Porch Dining' photo on the side Mt Adams?
    Best wishes

  14. Beautiful! Can I ask what color of paint you used. It looks like such a clean clear white?

And...I happen to love the juxtaposition of the dark antique cofee table with the lightness of the room.

  16. The new living room arrangement is lovely, as are your beautiful flowers! Have you checked Ikea for a sea grass rug? I was photographing a home last weekend and they had a great rug, they said it came from Ikea! My peonies are in bloom and I have a big bouquet on my dining room table!

  18. A sweet hello from Frog Hollow Farm! I love that you change your rooms around based on the seasons, I do it all the time! A great look for a glass coffee table is using two pretty floral ceramic vases as the legs on either side, holding up a piece of glass for the tabletop. I think that would look wonderful in your room! Ciao, bella!

  22. I really like your new room set-up. So pretty! Now you can see what's going on in the world outside you when you sit down to relax. :) Funny...I was just thinking last night how I wanted to change our living room up when Winter returns to accommodate a Christmas tree....we've never had a Christmas in our new place. Silly me...already thinking about Christmas...but I love it!

But now it's Spring! I AM going to enjoy it, too!

  27. Hi Trina,
Your Summer living room is beautiful; it is so light and airy. I love fresh flowers and your photos are exquisite. I have a small table with a marble top that I love for the change of texture. Now if I could just change the outdoor view from the suburbs....lol

  28. Good grief. You have the calm, spare, beautiful farm look down to an art. You make me want to toss a match on my house and start over. :)

As for tables with glass and gold, have you seen the Jules accent tables from Crate and Barrel? I just love them. I would link to them, but since I rarely comment here (I'm a lurker, sorry for that) I'm afraid my comment will go to spam--at least that's what happens at my blog when new visitors leave links to items. Gotta love Akismet! :)

  29. Hi Trina! Your living room looks lovely as always with the new summer changes - I love your attention to the simple details. I think a glass table would be lovely in front of the windows...it will be the perfect place to display your flower arrangements.
    Enjoy your day!

  31. Hi Dan,
I'll do a post on that soon. The wraparound porch is on the south (front) and west (side) sides of the house. The porch dining was taken on the west side, and frames the view of Mt. Adams that's to the north. So view from living room is the same as the porch dining as it faces north as well.

  34. Trina, Your living room is just lovely. It reminds me of the living room in our 1830 farmhouse in upstate New York, which we are in the process of restoring. Yours is such an inspiration to me - the simplicity is key! Cassandra ♥

  36. Lovely as always. You make everything look so perfect. I need to send you a pic of our pantry counter top. I had asked you about using Ikea butcher block and so we bought it, installed it, stained it and we really like it. Thanks for answering my questions about it, you were a big help.

  44. it's funny,
    (or perhaps not):
    but looking at the photos,
without having yet read the post,
    i thought a side table would complete the area;
it'll act nicely as a bridge between the chairs.
    perhaps something low,
so as not to interfere with the view?
