Transfer Ware

I received a request to post on my collection of transfer ware. I have three different patterns, a collection that started when I inherited my Grandmother's red transfer ware.

They were her everyday dishes that I grew up with. She lost many of the original plates in the California earth quakes. However, it was a pattern that continued to be made, so she was able to order replacements.

This is the mark on the back.

I display the red after Thanksgiving as they're part of my Christmas decorations. They stay up until spring, when it's time to display my teal blue transfer ware.

I bought these at an antique store in Washington state. They were on clearance and I almost passed them up thinking that although they were so beautiful, what would I ever do with them? That is the day I thought of putting up my different collections by season - and that is how I rationalized buying them!

This is the mark on the back.

This was taken last spring...which was the first spring I displayed them on the shelves.

The brown transfer ware goes up in fall. I came upon my brown transfer ware at Marshall's department store, and thought they would be perfect dishes to use for Thanksgiving.

This is the mark on the back of the plate.

If we didn't have the open shelves in the kitchen, I don't think I would have started collecting the other two patterns. But the open shelves are like a blank canvas, and can create a completely new look for the kitchen depending on what I put on them.

Soon I will be taking down the red transfer ware and putting up the teal blue bird transfer ware. This time, I'm going to try something different and attempt to create less of a kitchen feel and more of a 'room' feel.

Jennifer at The Newlywed Diaries posted on this look here and I really love it! So we'll see how I do - suggestions always welcome!

  1. I love how you trade them out. I love transferware and ironstone... I adore the marks on the back almost as much as the front.

  2. I love all of these sets of dishes but I am so partial to all things brown. I love that you can change them out with the seasons. It certainly helps keep you from getting bored.

  5. I love your collection - it's absolutely beautiful. When I see this it makes me wish I didn't have all white but I guess it's impossible to have every style so I'll just enjoy looking at yours! Leigh

  6. You have great transferware and I especially love the blue and white one. I love the little birds! So often when we think of seasons, we think of objects but not colors. What a great idea! (Sigh . . . if only I had some open shelves!)

The brown pattern is known as Asiatic Pheasant and a lot of the potters in England used that pattern. I have the same plates bought at Marshall's/Maxx as well only in blue!

  11. Each set is more beautiful than the next! My stepfather is the museum director/curator at the Reading Public Museum (PA) and brings home beautiful art, handblown glass, artifacts, etc from local artists and they display those on open shelving right along with their dishes-which are all handmade pottery pieces. It looks like a gallery wall of art. Can't wait to see the progess. Sarah

  12. Hi Trina,

I just want to tell you for the millionth time how much I love your kitchen and your style. I love all your transferware and yes, like Michelle I adore the markings as much as the pattern. My girlfriend and I will grab a piece while out hunting (we don't shop, we hunt) and the first thing we both do is flip it and let out a collective sigh.

As you know my kitchen has open shelving and I've tried differnt arrangements but always come back to white. What can I say? But I totally love and appreciate what you do.

  21. I love that you have 3 sets and take a few minutes to change them out seasonally. It's those small little details that make our home and design so enjoyable. I am dedicating Tuesdays to this very thing, so please visit if you have a moment.

  22. I love your dishes. I've admired them in several of your posts, so I'm glad to see them up close. Do you have full sets or just the dinner plates? I'm happy to get sets of plates alone, as that seems enough to change the look on the table, without the extra expense and room needed to store the bowls and serving pieces.

  28. Hi Trina,

I think my favourite transferware that you have is the red. Only because when I look at red it makes me so happy, obviously my favourite colour. I know what you mean with kitchens and not making them so 'kitchen' and more 'room'. When we re-did our kitchen 4 years ago, along the wall when you walk in the door there was a bank of cupboards there with a fridge in the middle. Yuck, so instead I went for a free standing cupboard in the corner (as you walk in) then we inherited a really nice dining chair that has turned legs and back and I put that next to the freestanding cupboard, (I'd tried the chair in several places in the house, but it never looked any good, so I was determined that this chair was going to look great in the kitchen!!) then I had a sideboard made, so that now completes that wall. I think it is different and gutsy, and I think I nailed the scale of things for this wall, so I think it works. This is my furniture wall, so I have things on the sideboard and decorate that but the rest of the kitchen has not much on the benches, as I really like and prefer that look. Hoping you are well.
    Take Care.

  29. Hey, Trina, I just recently found you via Pure Style Home. I'm pretty choosy when it comes to blogs that I frequent, and I've found a happy place to land in yours! Being a former interior designer, I've so enjoyed the journey of your remodel through your archives. You've done a fabulous job! Thanks for the great true-to-the-period attention you gave it. The brackets on your kitchen shelves are great, love the simple lines, and I'm with you on the not-so-kitchen look, too.

  30. Hi Elisabeth, I only use the red and brown. I'd be too nervous to use the teal blue ones - unless it was for a tea party! Doesn't that sound like fun! xoTrina

  46. Just one more question for you! Since I saw this post I've looked high an low for the blue/teal transfer ware. The only thing I find is dark blue. I've been collecting red but have never seen any I've loved as much as this blue/bird pattern. I looked up the stamp on the back but no luck. Do you have any more information on them? The name of the color or pattern? Thank you!
