Our Bedroom and Bath

We've made some subtle changes to our bedroom recently. The biggest change has been to set up the four poster bed again.

We kept the pelmet box which offers a whole different look when combined with the four poster bed. The alabaster lamps, which I stole from the guest house, are another small update.

We also finally added curtains awhile ago. The painted wood curtain hardware is from Home Depot, from the same line as the curtain hardware we used in the guest house (although those were stained, not painted). The curtains are from IKEA. I found these after trying about a half dozen other options, but couldn't find just the right the shade, sheen or price.

I also finally found a use for my Great Grandparents oriental rug. I've had it tucked away in a closet for safekeeping, but this low traffic area in front of the dresser will be a good place for it.

My Eastlake nightstand with the  marble top which used to be in the bedroom was used for the guest house bedroom. So in its place, I'm using another Eastlake table that belonged to my Great Grandparents.

Our happy fern.

Lastly, I realized that I've posted a lot on our bathroom but have never shot it from the opposite angle, which shows the custom cabinet we had made.

Due to the slanted ceiling of the half story, we wanted to position the sink on the left. A local cabinet maker made this one for us and it's been great.

The drawer under the sink is non-operational but the three drawers on the right and the cabinet beneath the sink offer great storage.

We used reproduction glass hardware on cabinet and drawers, while the faucet comes from Pottery Barn. The mirror above sink is in antique walnut frame, which fit perfectly in that unique spot.

  9. This is lovely as all of the rooms in your farm house and guest house are. Please tell me that things are not always so perfect.

We also have a four poster bed. I love it with very simple linens as you have used.

  10. Hi Trina, I am soooooo glad you
put your beautiful four poster bed back up...YEAH! Everything looks so
beautiful! I love eastlake and dark wood. The only thing I would do
differently is to take down the pelmet box....just my little opinion...hope you don't mind my expressing it. I love your home!

  12. It all looks wonderful, Trina - just love the four poster bed and the spindle bench at the foot is perfect. If I had your tub, I'd be soaking a lot!!

  13. I love the custom made cabinet in your bathroom, Trina. It works perfectly in that space, which could have been a bit awkward to deal with. The rug in your bedroom adds a nice touch of color.

  17. Hi Trina,

I love bedrooms that are so relaxing like yours. The whites with the wood are wonderful. I also bought curtains from Ikea but haven't opened up the packages yet. What curtains did you use and how did you clip them? I love how they just fall from the rod. Thanks and happy sleeping. Mary

  22. I couldn't find the name of the IKEA curtains online. I bought them in the store about six months ago or so. They are two-toned, as you can see in the photo of the dresser. That's something I didn't like about them but they are a heavy weight and neutral enough to fit the room. Good luck!

  23. Your bathroom vanity countertop. Is exactly what I am searching for...exact colors. Is your marble? Could you share details. So appreciated! Thanks.

  24. The bedrm/bath looks fantastic!! Very calming and country classic. I love my oriental rugs and use them even in high traffic areas. They are very forgiving rugs and can take abuse otherwise they wouldn't have lasted hundreds of years. Your rug and family items in the room are perfect. Thank you for sharing.

  25. Hi Trina,
Just love your blog. Would you mind where you purchased the neutral rug in your bedroom? I'm looking for good neutral, natural fiber rugs.
    Thanks!!

  27. Your master bedroom is a lovely retreat. I think the thing I like the most, besides the gorgeous furniture, is the lack of extra "things". The careful editing that you have done has made this room feel very restful.

  28. Anon,
Rug is from the Company Store - it's their own Company Store jute rug.

    Barb,
The vanity is marble, not sure what kind. Paint is Simply White by Benjamin Moore.

    Mary,
I clipped them using the clips from the hardware line. They are wooden with metal clips. I love the look and used them in the guest house too.

    Best,
    Trina

  36. Thanks for the info about the rug, Trina! Do you remember what color it was? I was looking at Oatmeal or Natural. It's so hard to tell on the Internet. Their wool-blend sisal texture rug looks nice also. It's so hard to find nice rugs at a decent price! Thanks again!

  37. I chose natural for the Company jute rug!

  42. Clearly you have a lovely home & have done a great job, but I don't understand how you're calling it a Farmhouse...I've never seen a farmhouse that looks like this...and judging by the other pictures you've shared, you're home use to be a late 1970's early 80's rancher...that you've basically built a brand new home over...and yet, you're calling it a farmhouse...i think for those of us actually fixing up old homes, this just seems confusing, maybe it's just for the blog?

  45. Fran,
The house was built in 1923. It was an old sheep farm, with an additional peach orchard. The original farmhouse did not have a dormer or a wraparound porch, we added those. Everything else was built ninety years ago.

  46. Such a beautiful and serene space Trina! Absolutely lovely.

I found Fran's comment to you to be rude and uneducated, if I may say so. The Farmhouse as a architectural style is a hybrid of styles. It does not have a defined definition like other styles, i.e. Colonial, Federal, Arts and Crafts, Greek Revival, etc.
Here is a good link to explain to Fran the history of a farmhouse... it actually describes your house to a "t"!

  47. Trina,
It is beautiful! I love your bed and am happy its back! Love all the light in the room. And as someone who has a lot ;) of antique rugs don't worry about the wear and tear- those rugs wear like iron!! Your great-grands would be so happy you are using and enjoying it!

  48. I am so envious of all the heirlooms you have from your family...that's truly wonderful!

I would give anything for that! I just turned 30 & my husband & I are fixing up our first home (it's a farmhouse too). I've been antiquing most of my life, but I don't have anything from my own family...it makes me really sad sometimes. I was just too young when everyone was still alive to ask them to save items for me - I had no idea what was ahead of me.

I wish I did, because I really miss them all & I'd love some physical reminders of them in my home...sorry for such a ramble...anyways, you're very lucky. :) xx

  49. I'm new to your site, but I love what Ive seen so far. I grew up in New England and my grandparents had a rambling farmhouse full of antiques. A nostalgic soft spot in my heart. The marble or stone bust on your bedroom dresser is beautiful. Can you say more about it?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi Belinda, The bust came from my Grandmother, who inherited it from her mother. My Great Grandmother traveled to Europe and bought the bust as a souvenir. She's been a part of my childhood for as long as I can remember. She's like an old friend. Best, Trina
