A Feathery Fern

I love my feathery fern and so far, it loves me back. I have had other plants in its place over the past two years, but unfortunately, they didn't work out.

That is the most polite way of saying that I did them in.

Too much watering.
Too little.

There was the spider plant.
And the Boston fern.

And of course, lots of fresh cut flowers like:

Between the fresh cut flowers that always needed replacing, and the house plants that just didn't last long, it's nice to have a constant friend who asks so little, but offers such a wonderful and whimsical presence.

I don't know the botanical name of this fern, but it has happily grown three times its size since living with us.

And we're happy to have her.

  10. Beautiful fern. Looks like you have a Plumosa Fern. I used to be a floral designer and we'd use these all the time in arrangements and in wedding bouquets. They hold up surprisingly well! They don't last long fresh cut because they tend to shed, but looks like so far so good with it being a house plant. Good luck!

  13. It's an Asparagus Setaceus, I believe. It is native to Southern Africa. Brings back fond memories of my grandmother's garden in Cape Town. She had an enormous one!

  20. I love this fern too. My mother had one for many years and we called it a lace fern because it was as soft as lace. Susan. Throughmyporchwindow.blogspot.com

  23. It's lovely Trina...so airy, it looks very happy!
I've just recently brought about the demise of several ferns...just haven't had the knack lately, maybe I'll try one of these...it delicately screams spring too.
    Continued success...

  26. You mean houseplants aren't like goldfish -- only on this earth for a short while? Why has no one told me this before? lol. Your pictures are truly beautiful and exude a peacefulness. Very nice.

  29. I agree with those who posted that it's an asparagus fern. I have always had good luck with them. I used to have a claw foot tub at my previous home and miss it so much. When I get enough money together to remodel that will be the first thing that gets put back in. I have the old one sitting outside just waiting. (We replaced it at the previous home before we sold it...pretty smart!)

  31. I LOVE ferns and just discovered something, today, in fact: Ferns are excellent plants for absorbing humidity from the air. That being said, it's no wonder my Boston ferns look horrible! We live in So. Cal where it is so dry. Your plant looks very happy where she is. :)

  32. I'm guessing it's an Asparagus Fern. Pretty sure it's not a Maidenhair and I'm not familiar with the others that have been mentioned.

I've always loved looking at the various plants that you put in this spot. The plant stand is a lovely way to display them.

  33. My plants don't "work out," either, except for potted orchids, which do grow for me, even though you'd think those would be the hardest of all. She is indeed very delicate and beautiful, and the view of the mountain from your house is just incredible, too. WOW.

    Take good care, Em

  37. You killed a spider plant? That's some bad luck!
I wish I could tell you what kind of fern it is, I can tell you it's none of the ones listed above.
