Our blackberry bush is bursting with berries this year.
So far (knock on wood), the deer have restrained from nibbling.
Last year we had a nice crop that gave us a good week or so worth of pickings. This year will be even better and I'm so excited as there's nothing quite sweeter than fresh picked berries.
The blueberry bushes are full of green berries as well. When we were out in the yard the other evening, I showed them to the babies as blueberries are one of their favorite foods. Margaret gave a few a little squeeze and determined that we'll have to wait a few more weeks before pickin'.
Last season they weren't quite ready to eat blueberries, so it will be a special treat when we pick them this year.

I don't have blueberries but I have masses of blackberries...the sort that grow wild in our hedgerows! Last year I made bramble (blackberry ) jelly and we are still enjoying it. I also put some in the freezer for the pies and crumbles that we love. Your post brought back many happy memories! Thanks Joan

ReplyDeleteI love ur berry posts with the lids little hands on them. Too sweet. I tried growing them but the deer and the birds attacked them. I Used to go picking in my neighbors yard witH his permission but he moved. So sad don't know new people that well to go picking. Your berry bushes look yummy enjoy

That is so exciting! We planted three blueberry bushes last year in the children's garden but every year the birds eat all the berries before they finish ripening. This year we even put up a net and they still got to them!

ReplyDeleteWhat is the trick to get such large, healthy looking blueberries? I have some, but they seem so small and sparse looking. Any help would be appreciated. Good fertilizer? Compost?

ReplyDeleteWe did fertilize last spring, just as they were leafing out. It's an acid based fertilizer. Other than that, sunshine and watering have made ours happy!

ReplyDeleteI can't believe how the seasons are so different from place to place. We just picked the last of our blueberries and raspberries here in South Georgia. The peaches are finishing up and the pears are ready to be picked. Your blackberries are amazing!

ReplyDeleteYum! We are so lucky as to have black cap raspberries growing wild in the woods. Berry picking is such a delight. Yes, it takes time, but it's also many long moments of considering the delicious things that are to come. Berry tarts and berry ice creams are my favorites.
