We were in need of a chair for our new office. But finding just the right one (and within our budget) didn't come easily. That is mostly because there is just one antique mall in our general region that fits a double stroller, so my search area was limited.
At last, I found the chair I was looking for. I actually found it a month ago but didn't buy it because I thought I would find something I liked even better. But after looking at local auctions (online photos of their inventories), monitoring Craigslist, and peeking into a few antique stores (while Mike waited out in the car with the dumplings), I realized just what a great find it was.
That's usually how it goes when you're looking for something you've never really looked for before and you come across an intriguing option. It takes some time to understand if what you have found is indeed a good find.
When I returned to the antique store this past weekend, the chair was miraculously still there.
And on sale - for $60.
The upholstery features a beautiful needlepoint with warm tones. I will eventually reupholster it (much like what Phyllis did at Henhurst Interiors). But for now, I will enjoy the roses, and the femininity and grace they offer.
The arms have nice carved details in the wood and little padded arm rests, which I thought were quite lovely. I also like the warmth of the lighter wood, which accents similar tones in the library table.
The chair also has fluted legs, which is a detail I love.

Inherited a lovely needlepoint/velvet pillow from my mother-in-law.

As lovely as the chair/needle point are, I would recover it too.

ReplyDeleteThat is a great find. Please do not upholster it! While some plain off white is nice, I am not a fan of everything being the same. This stands out without screaming. It is lovely just the way it is!

I think it would be lovely covered in a fresh fabric. Save the needlepoint for another project!
ReplyDeleteI think the compromise is to leave the needlepoint until it becomes too tattered. The seat does have a hole the size of a quarter so eventually it will definitely need new fabric.

Love the chair just as it is. Perhaps when you do cover it the needlepoint would make a nice pillow. It seems the colors are so soft and warm.

Catherine I'm one of those who really loves the look of the chair now with the vintage needlepoint, it's such a romantic cottage style......Whenever i see things like needlepoint or quilts i am always struck by the time and patience someone took to make them. Lovely pattern, it's beautiful, enjoy your find!!
ReplyDeleteLovely, maybe make a slipcover for it, one for the cushion, back and I've even seen them done for the arm pads. It is a great find! What would be nice is some little caster wheels.

We spent all of our time fixing up the old farmhouse (it was before our children) and we just don't want to use our time for that at this point (we'd rather play with the children). I love your chair and as much as your like neutrals, what you plan is beautiful . . . but I think I would leave the needlepoint alone and maybe redo the back and arms in that neutral and then when you see the front of the chair . . . surprise! Needlepoint seems to fit in your house!
ReplyDeleteI have read your blog "forever" and you are one of my "Friends of Linderhof" but I've never commented. Although we live in a "colorful" house, I love your neutral pallet. And I think it is hard to accomplish with style. I see many blogs with a similar pallet but they don't seem to be able to pull it off -- but you do! The children's room is precious. Comfy, cozy but not overdone! I like your simplicity in decorating and in tabletops as well. But my only comment -- where are the children's clothes?
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine reupholstering the chair unless it was in absolute tatters. The needlepoint is much more elegant than anything you could possibly do in white or other neutrals. Neutrals may be classic, but they can also be BORING! Your houses have always delighted me because your furniture is classic and there is no clutter--I can't abide rooms where there's absolutely no place to set a teacup or sit down without moving something.
