Original light was a reproduction tin sconce.
We replaced it with an $8 sconce I found at our local ReStore (while looking for something else).
The shade comes from one of the old sconces we used above our fireplace in our old house.

ReplyDeleteDeni, We love our rental house but it is perhaps too small for long term living. Mike has hit his head a dozen times already as the stairwells are very low! But we are grateful to be here for the time being.

It's amazing how the new sconce brightens up the space. Adding the small artwork underneath it is such a nice touch. My husband hits his head in the doorway when we go visit my family in Japan. I guess we might have to put up a "duck your head" sign so they won't get hurt! Have a lovely weekend. xx

ReplyDeleteI was surprised at your choice of the chrome sconce...I liked the repro one better...I bet you'll find yet another that will be just right. I do like the art work placed below it...just not loving the chrome.
ReplyDeleteI love your decorating style, yet in this case I much prefer the reproduction. The new one seems more like a bath sconce to me and the art beneath not needed. I think you must have a plan though, because as I said I love your style!

ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that I did not care for the tin sconce. I love all things old but I do not feel drawn to primitives. The chrome sconce, although it has Colonial lines, would not have been my first choice if I was planning long term.
ReplyDeleteBut we are trying to keep our rental makeover costs to a minimum -balancing what we'd choose long term (if we owned the house) versus what we're choosing short term (as renters) at low cost.
It's certainly an adjustment after renovating our old house.
I have made a change to the primitive chandelier that was in the room as well! I'll try and take some pictures soon and post on that too. Overall, I think both changes have made the room a bit more updated and brighter without compromising the historic beauty of the home.

I think that's the important thing here... Making the most of what is temporary. In this case, I think it's refreshing and brighter.

I like the new sconce, but not the shininess. I think that is what is drawing people away from liking it, but much better than the primitive sconce. I love to see your little touches in the rental, makes it more home, even if temporary!

ReplyDeleteYes, the shiny finish isn't a first choice. But the choices are slim in the $8 department so I compromised on that.

We really aren't changing much at all. We don't know how long we will be here but it is our instinct (the house people that we are) to make this temporary home as much as ours as we can. It just feels cozier that way.

I think the new sconce looks much better. I didn't care for the old sconce at all. I love how you are making the rental as nice as possible. Your instincts are very good.

The reproduction tin sconce is better suited to the style of the home, but you might as well make the space feel like you while you're there. Maybe you could spray paint the new sconce black (since it was only $8). Might not look good with the painting, but that could go somewhere else so the sconce would stand out more.
