A Kitchen of Roses

Fresh cut roses are among my favorite summer things. I look forward to making bouquets for the house with great anticipation. They make the house feel as if summer has walked in.

My mom has a small rose garden from which she makes the most beautiful bouquets. You couldn't find anything more lovely in even the most exquisite flower shop. My memories of growing up with those bouquets are what inspired me to grow roses of my own.

So far I've planted the varieties Geoff Hamilton, Windemere, Glamis Castle and Heritage by David Austin. All are soft shades of pink and white.

My only regret is that they don't last forever.

But perhaps that's a good thing as it's always those fleeting tastes of sweetness that make you revel in their beauty all the more.

  6. Your roses are stunnning and look lovely in your beautiful kitchen!! I've just cut some roses from the garden and brought them into my kitchen as well. They add a touch of sunshine to the room, for sure. :)

  7. Your roses are beautiful, and look lovely in your displays.
You could try drying them in sand boxes.

  8. This looks so pretty. I used to have the most beautiful rose garden, but it got too much of a job and I got rid of them. But I miss the cut flowers in the house. I have never understood people that don't cut their flowers... that is why I grow them...

  9. Beautiful. Roses always remind me of my grandmother. I've planted 2 rose gardens when I had homes in florida and Virginia - sadly living in NYC now means the closest I get to a rose garden - is the corner store!

  13. Hi!
The counter tops are butcher block from IKEA. There were extremely affordable - only $80 per slab. We only needed three slabs so it was a huge bargain for something we thought would offer a lot of charm to the space.
We used a product called Safecoat to stain the counters. We chose 'cedar' for the color and finished it with a top coat from the same company.

  14. Your roses are beautiful. I've been pretty successful at growing most things, but not roses. The only rose I have that is doing well is a shrub rose. Your roses are an inspiration and I will have to keep trying.

  15. the roses are beautiful, so is your kitchen ! my husband and I are redoing our kitchen now, we are putting a bank of windows above the sink, he wants to go without upper cabinets, do you have a dish closet or a pantry where you put most of your food, dishes, etc. and do you miss not having any cabinets above ? Enjoying your blog so much !

  16. Hi Anon,
All of our everyday dishes are on the shelves. The lower cabinets hold everything else. As far as food goes, we have a small pantry to the left of the kitchen sink. It was an old pie safe that we converted.
Our kitchen is small so we keep it simple!

  17. Trina, I fell in love with your kitchen when I fell in love with blogs....January of this year! It is even more lovely {if that's possible} with the addition of your roses. Just caught up on a few of your older posts and it looks like your garden is really coming along. You will love your grapevine pergola during the heat in future years! xx Suzanne

  23. Lovely! I wish we had a little more sun. I would love to grow roses, but our small yard is under a canopy of old, big trees. Beautiful in it's own right. I still have sweet memories of my Mum making me Lilly of the Valley, Lavender and Rose bouquets. She had a special vase just for my room.

  29. Hello Trina, Your roses are beautiful. David Austin has some of the most beautiful roses in the business. When we lived in the city I had 7 different kinds of his roses 3 were climbers on the front porch and arbor and running along the picket fence. Unfortunately there were no gardens here at the farm cottage where we moved to last year. This fall we are planning to build a screened porch and gardens surrounded by a picket fence. It will be good to smell roses again. Have a wonderful Monday...Maura :)

  30. I adore David Austin roses! You lucky girl. Mine didn't have such a good life, it has reverted back to a wild rose. Sigh. So for now, I will enjoy looking at yours. They are perfect in your kitchen.

  52. Hi Jen,

I started out with a Canon one shot and then a couple of years ago, graduated to a Canon Rebel xsi. It's made a big difference in crispness and quality of color.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

  54. I just opened up my newest issue of Food & Wine to a page and said, "HEY! I know that kitchen!" Congrats on that feature!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yes, I saw your kitchen featured in Food & Wine also and wanted to know what cabinetry you used. It mentioned that your block countertops are Ikea, but it didn't mentioned the cabinets below. Are they also Ikea? And if so, do you recommend Ikea?

My husband and I are about to jump into our first home (a serious fixer-upper) so any suggestions would be helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  59. What size is your sink? I am looking at the Rohl fireclay sink. 30 or 36 inch? How has it held up? I plan heavy use. Thanks, Maria

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hi Maria,

Measurements of our sink are 27 x 17 (inside). It's fireclay but I don't know about heavy use. We were told to use caution as it can crack. So perhaps something more hardy for your purposes would be better.

    Otherwise, it's held up great!

  62. Hi Trina,

Hoping I might ask a quick question...we are planning on installing open shelving in our newly renovated kitchen. Just wondering if you would be kind enough to share the depth of your shelving and if you made the brackets or purchased them? If the latter can you please advise where. Enjoy your blog very much! With thanks, Karelyn

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hi Karelyn,

The carpenter that built our cabinets, built the brackets as well. But you can find them easily online and in speciality (old house) hardware stores.

    Good luck!

I share many of the same loves as you, photography, vintage, an IVF baby, and FLOWERS!
At the beg. of the year our family of 7 decided to go vegetarian and i have this robins egg blue vintage turkey pan i've held on to because i want to give it to a good home. And i really think its home should be with you! I've posted photos of it on my blog for you to see: http://www.mycapecod.blogspot.com/ I'd love to mail it to you if you email me your mailing address. I don't get notifications on this web site bc i have a new email. If you like it you can email me here with the info: sarahdaughertyphoto@live.com

  65. I just discovered your lovely blog today via Urban Cottage. I hope you see this message as this post is over a year old!

I would love open shelves in my kitchen (one day). What makes me hesitate is dust - have you found everything needs to be cleaned before you use it? or do you use those things so much its not as issue? Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hello KBD,
There is dust but not on any dishes that we use regularly. I dust the shelves and everything on it that doesn't get used often every month or so. Some seasons (summer) are dustier than others.
