Out and About

During our house renovation, we spent a great deal of time at Rejuvenation in Portland, which carries salvage and reproduction hardware, house parts, lighting, furniture and all sorts of specialty items. Back then they also carried plumbing, although this has recently been discontinued.

They were a great resource for us, starting with our first clawfoot tub which we purchased just a few days after we got the keys to the house. That first tub - an enthusiastic and charismatic, but misguided first purchase! It spent nearly six months being shuffled around various locations of the house in order to be out of the way while we completed the main floor renovation around it. We followed that purchase with many more. Next up were the farmhouse sink, a second clawfoot tub, and the rest of the plumbing fixtures.  We also purchased all of our window, door and cabinet hardware from them, as well as our porch light fixtures and most of our indoor fixtures as well.

We stopped by the store again recently - here are a few photos from the visit.

Although we didn't get the brackets for our kitchen shelves from them, they do have a wonderful selection.

Here's our family portrait!

I love their selection of antique hardware. You can read a post my friend Steve did at An Urban Cottage to learn an easy way to remove paint from hardware.

Here is Foley helping us with some research. She helped us a tremendous amount during our renovation.

I fell in love with this couch!

I didn't dare get too close to this display while I was holding Margaret in my arms, but think that this may be a mixture of old and new.

All of their reproduction shades are displayed on this open shelf. For our kitchen light, we were able to fit one of these to an antique schoolhouse base that I'd had been saving for many years.

The babies' favorite part of our visit was getting down to run around in this big open space. It's extra cute to us because this was the first day that Graham and Margaret were wearing big kid shoes. They were laughing up a storm as they toddled back and forth.

Graham is trying out the Simpson door that inspired our exterior front doors. This display was actually very helpful because, as we learned from our renovation experience, it's quite common to have to order items without seeing them firsthand. So having a display to view major items like windows and doors was very helpful and eased pre-order jitters significantly.

Margaret is making sure to check prices...note, new shoes!

Here is Margaret inspecting the Marvin windows, which are what we used throughout our house.

Apparently, Rejuvenation was just acquired by Williams Sonoma and will be expanding beyond their Portland and Seattle stores. I think it's great because I admire their ethic of recycling original and classic house parts. But I also admire that they inspire people to restore their old homes through their great reproduction line.

Soon I'll tell you what brought us to the store! We are indeed working on a little project this spring...details to follow.

What a beautiful store. I would get lost in the beauty, history, the stories behind all the merchandise. Speaking of beauty, your babies are simply..treasures. Luv their new shoes. Much love, Lisa

I've loved Rejuvenation for years and have bought reproduction fixtures and globes from them -- I really am sorry to hear that they've been acquired by WS -- it will take away some of the uniqueness of the store! Sigh!

After having catalogue after catalogue for years it was fun to see your pictures of the store -- Sigh -- I wish I could visit -- and now I guess I'll be able to because WS will have one in every major city!

Trina, I have been wanting to tell you that you are responsible for a very happy purchase at my house. We are in the midst of remodeling both of our bathrooms, and purchased a clawfoot tub from Rejuvenation online at a shockingly low closeout price ... I had been pricing them elsewhere and becoming discouraged, and if I hadn't searched through your older posts where you got yours, I would not have thought to check Rejuvenation. Even with freight from Oregon to southern California, it was about a fourth the cost of what we were seeing elsewhere. I am so thankful to you for this! Just an encouragement that the info you provide really is a blessing. :)

The kids are so darling in these photos. I love seeing them walking. :) So cute.

Wow, this was interesting. As a regular client to Finnish reclaim stores this is in part familiar and in part different - some of our building techniques are the same as with you, some vary... Thank you for this!
And very cute shoes :-)

oh, my even though we are traveling to Portland next year to see the store...I'm happy they are expanding to other states.
Have been a huge fan of this company and we live in an 1860's farmhouse in Ohio. Lowe's etc. doesn't help us much in authenticity.
Your kids are darling!

I enjoyed your trip to Rejuvenation since I've never been there in person. Also fun to see what the little ones' interests are at Rejuvenation. Cute shoes!

There will probably be a Rejuvenation in the SF Bay Area too. But I'm sorry to hear that they won't be independent. Going to the mall to buy reproduction house parts won't be so special. Of course going with Graham and Margaret would always be more fun!

Steve's post about stripping paint from hardware was very helpful too.

Looking forward to reading about your next project.

Beautiful photos of the great store and your lovely family! I was not aware that there was a store in Seattle and now I will have to drag Hubby on a field trip soon! I did the same with my home when we built it, claw foot tubs, pedestel sinks, etc. So much fun scouting everything out. Thanks for the info and the great photos! xx

Such an awesome post - and what an incredibly beautiful hamily you have.

That store is to die for! Awesome, it may spread everywhere with the support of W-S!!

Your house must be really amazing!

Wow, that's a great store. Thanks for the tour. You have a lovely family.

What excites me is how much more is possible from one's home when living in proximity to a source like that! Wonderful! There is nothing like that here. Ugh. :)

The kids are lovely. I can see that you would love that sofa. It looks like a Lee piece I was coveting but I always thought having no seat cushion (to turn over) might be impractical in the event of a spill!

I have an antique lamp, that I accidentally broke the glass shade on. I have been looking in very antique shop around for a replacement. I saw the shade in one of your photos. Do they have a web site? I so hope so. I can finally use my lamp. Please let me know. THANKS

What a fun post! So cute to see the family out and about. I love Rejuvenation's products. We have some of their items in our old house. Sadly, I had to send a lot of hardware I had purchased back because they didn't quite fit our irregular doors and cabinets. Their quality is great ... hope that doesn't change now that Williams Sonoma owns them. That was news to me.

Looking forward to more posts like this -- and can't wait to see what project you're working on. It will be fabulous, I know.

I found similar stores in Atlanta and Savannah when we were building our house. I incorporated as many old elements as I could. i must have done a good job, because people are constantly coming in and saying, "You really did a good job restoring this house." I laugh and tell them that we built it to look old. They're always amazed at the attention to detail. I sure had fun and would do it again in a heartbeat.

How fun it must have been for Margaret and Graham on this big adventure, and in first time big kid shoes no less! The must have loved seeing all the lights too...so much to look at.
I think I was almost living at the Rejuvenation while building 24C...it's still my favorite go-to place for inspiration, I hope Williams Sonoma keeps the integrity of Rejuv...I must confess, I'm a bit nervous now...but if they do this right, a Rejuvenation style revolution just might make a huge influence on design, and that would be pretty neat.
I love that you and Margaret were kind of matching!

Graham and Margaret are so adorable! We have many knobs, light plates, light fixtures, etc. from Rejuvenation. We have used them for years. I sit down immediately when their catalog arrives. When I first discovered your blog I was thrilled to see you used them for so very many items in your beautiful home. I have had such a great experience with Rejuvenation in the past, I don't know how I feel about the acquisition by WS. I am concerned it will take away from the charm and uniqueness it has held for me all these years. We shall see. However, the reason for your visit is probably going to be very fun!

I am IN love with those doorknobs! Makes me want to hop on a flight and head out to Portland even more. I have some great friends out in Lake Oswego and I'm always looking for more reasons to justify the flight - lol! Great post!! Shelly

Wow... that is a lot of work but will be worth it in the end. I would pay money to get a decent tub, the new ones are awful, when we first got married 38 years ago we had a claw foot porcelain tub and it was original to the house and wonderful. As we get older we can't get one anymore but would love to exchange the 'new' tub for the old fashioned kind eve if it was the shorter version. The little ones are adorable and your hubby looks great too.

I'm sorry I am very late in responding to another subject regarding your grandmother. Want to tell you that she was just like Granny but she was not hearing impaired. She had a beautiful heart, and she was always kind to everyone. She passed away at age of 91. I do miss her so much. By the way, I am deaf.

Your farmhouse is so amazing. I love farmhouses.

You have a beautiful family.
